Tractor trailers charred in crash near Virginia line, I

Aug 16, 2023

Two tractor trailers were scorched Tuesday when they collided on Interstate 85 in Warren County, close to the Virginia state line.

All southbound lanes of I-85 were closed 2 miles after Exit 233 (U.S. Highway 401) due to the crash, which occurred around 10 a.m. All lanes were not re-opened until just after 5 p.m.

According to the State Highway Patrol, a tractor trailer carrying yogurt crashed into the back of a tractor trailer carrying laminate flooring. The trucks were traveling 60 mph and 70 mph.

Both drivers were able to get out of the trucks before a fire started in the yogurt truck, and officials said the fire spread to the other truck.

Sky 5 flew over the aftermath of the crash at 12:30 p.m., where the tractor trailers were completely charred and blocking all southbound lanes.

Bulldozers were working to remove the remains of the tractor trailer and its contents, which were scorched and unrecognizable.

The driver of the truck carrying yogurt was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The road remained closed at 2:15 p.m. As a detour, drivers can take Exit 233 (U.S. 401 South), which becomes U.S. 1 South in Norlina. Follow U.S. 1 South and make a right onto Manson Drewry Road to re-access I-85 South.
