WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A crash involving two tractor-trailers caused heavy delays and lane closures Friday morning on Interstate 95 southbound in West Haven, as the collision resulted in a breach causing milk and orange juice to spill onto the highway.

According to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the crash occurred on I-95 southbound between Exits 42 and 41.

A preliminary investigation showed that Connecticut State Police Troop G in Bridgeport responded to the areas around 5:45 a.m. for the collision involving two tractor-trailers.

According to state police, a tractor-trailer for Guida’s Dairy was traveling in the right lane of three, when it was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer for FirstFleet.

Police said driver for the First-Fleet tractor-trailer was attempting to move from the center lane into the right lane when it crashed into the rear of the Guida’s semi-truck.

Police said the Guida’s Dairy tractor-trailer then jackknifed and both vehicles came to a rest in the right lane.

The driver of the Guida’s Dairy truck was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital. Both drivers reported minor injuries in the collision.

Police said both tractor-trailers sustained ruptured fuel tanks which caused diesel fuel to spill onto the highway.

In addition, the Guida’s Dairy truck sustained damage to the trailer causing its contents which included milk and orange juice to spill on the highway.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Department of Transportation and Department of Public Health responded to the crash, due to the food breach on the roadway.

Police said both tractor-trailers were towed from the scene of the crash by Buneaus.

The driver of the FirstFleet tractor-trailer was found to be at fault for the crash and issued an infraction for failure to maintain in the proper lane.

The crash caused a partial closure of Interstate 95 southbound in West Haven for several hours, police said. The highway has since been fully reopened.
